First, Not every photographer is capable of doing a newborn session. Do your research and find the right one. I suggest looking at the style of each photographer and compare with your expectations and desire for the session. Ask, Does this photographer consistently deliver quality images? Is the editing style in line with what I am looking for? Is their work newborns, weddings, families… ect? spoiler alert!! you’ll want to see a good consistent posting of newborn sessions. You want a photographer that works with newborns often. A photographer that knows all the safety techniques.
Second, newborn sessions are time sensitive. Most photographers who specialize in newborn sessions will prefer to do your session before 2 weeks old. Some will go up to 4 weeks old. For this reason, I suggest starting the process off finding the perfect photographer in your second trimester. Often times, waiting until the baby is here often happens for moms who haven’t done these kind of sessions before. If this is you, it doesn’t hurt to reach out to the photographer you are wanting to use. They may still have a opening available.
Third, this is in addition to the second.. This is one of the most tiring but joyous times you will ever have in your life. As a result, the first year of life goes by so quickly. I truly believe these portraits are a life time investment. Work the cost into your budget ahead of time to prevent the sticker shock.
